"A TV-style detective story in real life"

I love binge-watching detective shows and teen dramas, but sometimes real life serves up storylines even wilder than what you’d find on Netflix.

I was sitting in a coffee shop in Podil, sipping an iced latte and minding my own business while listening to my playlist. At the table opposite me sat a guy in a bucket hat, engrossed in texting someone; he had such a focused look on his face—he was the spitting image of an undercover agent! Then, a small sticky note fell out of his pocket. Acting on my inner "detective" instinct, I picked it up and read: "Don't forget to buy a loaf of bread, get the cat, and save the world at 6:00 PM."

I couldn't help myself—I caught up with him on the way out, held out the note, and said, "Agent, your secret mission to buy bread is in jeopardy!" He was taken aback at first, but then burst into such infectious laughter that we ended up chatting for half an hour. It turned out he was a freelance screenwriter. So much for TV series playing out in real life!
