The perfect facade and three red flags
How to spot disrespect from the very first date
He gallantly offers his hand, remembers your favorite coffee, and hangs on your every word. Yet, for some reason, the date leaves a strange aftertaste—as if you weren't truly seen, but merely sized up.
Deep-seated disrespect often hides behind impeccable manners. Here are three seemingly harmless phrases that scream that a man does not respect you.
1. "You’re not like other women."
Why it sounds nice: We tend to take this as a compliment, believing he appreciates our uniqueness.
The catch: This phrase signals the devaluation of all other women (and potentially you, too, in the future). The man divides the world into the "convenient" and the "wrong" types, placing you on a pedestal only to knock you off it later. True respect values a woman for who she is, not by disparaging others.
2. "You’re overreacting"
Why it sounds convincing: He says it in a calm voice, making you question your own sanity.
The catch: This is classic gaslighting. Instead of apologizing for hurting your feelings or discussing the issue, he dismisses your emotions. It completely erases your boundaries: your feelings are labeled "wrong," and you are branded "hysterical." A loving man treats your reactions with care, even if he doesn't fully understand them.
3. "I was just joking; you have no sense of humor."
Why it seems trivial: It makes it appear as though you are simply too uptight and fail to grasp sarcasm.
The catch: What masquerades as a harmless joke actually masks underlying aggression and toxicity. If you feel uncomfortable yet the person persists and accuses you of being a killjoy, it shows a lack of respect for your comfort. A joke ceases to be a joke when only one person is laughing.
It is important to remember: True respect isn't shown through grand gestures early on, but rather in how a man responds to your boundaries, emotions, and your "no."
