An Incident by the Elevator: When a Chance Drop of Books Changes the Evening’s Script
To be honest, as I started writing this section, I paused for a moment with a heavy sigh. A twinge of bitter disappointment stirred within me: what if you read this, shrug, and think—here we go again, someone else imposing their chatter on me? But then, that stubborn, bright hope of mine stirred to life—whispering that genuine, sincere connection always finds a response. And since you’re reading these lines, curiosity won out after all, didn't it?
A story that happened to me just yesterday. No clichés—just real life, pure and simple!
Yesterday’s incident at my building entrance
I was coming home yesterday evening. I was carrying a huge stack of books wrapped in thick kraft paper (I’d just picked up a rare edition from a collection point) and a heavy bag. I walked up to the entrance and was already reaching into my purse for my keys when, suddenly, a loud crash rang out on the steps behind me.
I startle in surprise and make an awkward move—and my entire stack of books goes flying noisily across the porch steps. Some of the paper covers flip open, and pages rustle in the wind.
I stand amidst this bookish disaster, mentally rolling my eyes at my own clumsiness, when a voice rings out—deep and calm:
“It seems literature has decided to take over this evening without your permission. Let me help restore order in the library.”
I look up—sitting on the steps is the neighbor from the second floor, whom I’ve only ever glimpsed in passing. Without a word, he begins very carefully gathering the scattered books and stacking them up.
We had just finished tidying up and he handed me a stack of books when—just my luck—a huge dog came bounding in and knocked me off my feet, sending the whole stack tumbling down on top of me...
"You know, your evening is off to quite an exciting start," my neighbor said, sitting down next to me on the stairs...
A little girl simply couldn't hold back the big, young dog that had burst into the building entrance...
My neighbor remarked that my bad luck today had rubbed off on him a little, too...
So, things aren't exactly fun right now—what with these worn-out books and a bump on my head. I probably won't be saying hello to my neighbor, either, since he thinks I’m bad luck...
Do you think it’s contagious?
Or just a coincidence?
Has this ever happened to you personally? Two incidents like that all at once?
